I've been lurking the internet trying to find out more about the grease gland of a male guinea pig. I've come to notice that the fur above Pudge's gland is matted with a dark, squishy substance. It's obvious his gland has never been cleaned but I'd like to know the proper way to remove the matted fur and do some other male maintenance that all boars require so as to keep the ever changing petstore herd in better condition.
I would also like to know how I can sex all the pigs at my store. All small animals we get are males and in many it is obvious their gender but, I still want to make sure just in case. I don't want any baby piggies surprising us one day.
Thanks! |

Cut the matted fur with a pair of large scissors. Make sure you only cut hair and not skin. Don't pull on the hair too much.
Most guinea pigs do not need regular maintenance for the grease gland. I would avoid using any chemicals that might be harmful if ingested or merely inhaled or absorbed. You can try cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil or plain mineral oil. Unless the problem is really severe, most pigs don't mind being a little dirty back there, and would be better off if you just left them alone. Routine hair cuts to keep the area from matting up again would be good.
Try the sexing page at cavyspirit.com. There are good examples there. |
